Coins in the rain…

Grocery shopping recently involved visiting a few different stores for certain bargains. Light rain danced in the air as Alan and I left the house on the way to the first stop. This area has been experiencing torrential downpours on and off for weeks. Hats and umbrellas are important items and we were prepared.

Arriving in the lot of our first destination, a parking place was easily found. The rain paused and we headed into the store. The first stop was a success. Items on our list were in stock.

We enjoyed nice conversation with employees. No need to rush. Visit for a while. The rain had stopped.

Well..the rain had stopped until we finished shopping and checked out. Looking outside the store doors, sheets of rain were pouring from the sky, pounding the pavement with huge drops. Hats and umbrellas were no match for this storm.

Deciding to step outside the store door and wait under the awning, we said our “goodbyes” to the employees and found a spot to stand and watch. As the rain poured, we waited patiently, noticing vehicles slowing their speeds on the slick road.

A mailbox sits near the front door of this store. We have seen people place their letters, etc. in the box. Today, there was something different on top of the box.

Sitting in a small pile, on top of the mailbox, were numerous coins. No dollar bills, just coins. No person was near the box. Just us as we stood and waited for the rain to lighten so we could walk to our car.

I imagined how someone probably had loose change and thought, “I’ll just leave this change here for someone else to use.” The true story of why the coins were there will always remain unknown to us.

Yet, someone may have come along and needed those extra coins and there they were, just waiting.

Blessings can come in all different sizes and shapes. Today, I saw the blessings of coins on top of a mailbox. We left the coins there and know God was providing a blessing for whoever found the coins.

Amazing, the things we can see if we stand still and wait for the rain to pass. Coins on a mailbox waiting to be a blessing.

Have you seen any unexpected blessings from God lately? Pause and look around you. Maybe you will find some way to leave a surprise blessing for another person.

Blessings,
Mimi

  1. It is amazing what something as simple as a few coins can mean to someone who needs them. This past year, there was a young man at Aldi. He was asking people if he could return their carts and keep the quarter. I don’t know how much money he made that day, but you better believe I let him return my cart (and gave him a bit more). I saw quite a few people take him up on the offer. I pray his needs were met.

  2. Mimi- Thanks for your thoughtful perspective. It DOES depend upon ATTITUDE, doesn’t it? I have a friend who says, “Don’t curse the storm. Learn to dance in the rain!” Yours for joy-filled dancing- ART STANLEY

  3. My first thought if i saw these coins would be that someone forgot them. Considering that they were left to bless someone else is a great way to think of our fellow humans, but more importantly, intentional providence of God. Thanks for sharing this perspective. We need more optimism like this.

    • Those coins blessed my husband and me that day because we were reminded of the love God has for us all. Thinking about the story behind those coins being left there gave us time to remember all the blessings God provides, from big things to small things. Thank you for reading and commenting. Have a blessed day! šŸ™‚

  4. How lovely to have access to lots of beautiful rain, Mimi. Here in Texas, it has been many degrees over 100 for June and July with little to no rain. During the hottest days, some people place cold cokes on top of their trash can lids before the garbage truck barrels down the street. Those poor workers are so hot, and I’m sure an ice-cold soda is a treasured treat. My mother always leaves something cold for our yard workers who care for the lawn, and I pack up cookies for them whenever I have them fresh from the oven! It’s the small things that make the biggest difference. Blessings, dear friend! XO

  5. That’s a really interesting idea. I wonder what prompted that person to leave the coins in that spot?
Karen has some great ideas – we have had some AWFUL heat here too. 100 degrees at 6:30pm tonight!! šŸ˜¦ And drought-ish here in Southern California. Rain sounds delicious.
Anyway, we could all stand to do more small acts of kindness and mercy to strangers.
The only small blessings I can think of receiving recently are when I pull up to a parking meter with an hour still left on it – definitely can brighten my day! šŸ˜€

    • We have parking meters in downtown Charleston. Always a great surprise to find a meter with some time left. A small blessing that is appreciated very much. We’ve been complaining about all the rain lately. Wish we could send some to places in need of rain. Thank you for reading and commenting. Have a blessed day! šŸ™‚

  6. I love how God provides for someone in unexpected ways especially in these small ways. He cares even about the smallest part of our lives. And that person God is helping may not even know Him but God is still there. Great read

  7. Love this, Melissa. This line is simple yet powerful at the same time. “Blessings can come in all different sizes and shapes.” I think we forget that basic principle and just look for what we consider the “big” things to celebrate. This is a wonderful story.

  8. I couldn’t help but smile as I read your post. Indeed we can see things we might miss otherwise when we take the time to pause. Your tagline, it’s always a story with the Henderson’s is so very true.

  9. This is how I feel when God prepares a blessing for us in advance even before we realized that we had a need. Like in the story of Ruth where Boaz asked the workers to leave the crops for Ruth to glean, to just easily pick up and find her blessings as she walked on her way.

  10. Such a sweet thing to leave a blessing like that for a stranger. And such a blessing to be a witness to a kind gesture. I’m sure those coins were found by just the right person at just the right time. God is good!

  11. What a beautiful story of kindness! We hear so much about the dark state of this world, and yet God is still keeping kindness alive. I am so glad that He allowed you to pause and see those coins, and to share the story to bless us all here! May He bring blessings to you also!

  12. This is beautiful Mimi. How lovely and opportune that you chose this moment to pause and notice the blessing of the coins. There is so much good in the world. We only need to focus on that. Thank you for this post. It really cheered me up today.

  13. I loved this story! A rainy day blessing, enjoyed by you and left for another. You are so right, if we pause long enough to take in the people and things around us, we can find little traces of God’s love, provision and touch everywhere. Even in a small pile of coins. Blessings to you, rain or shine!

  14. Beautiful post. I will treasure this remembrance. Thank you for sharing! As scripture says, God’s ways are above our ways, and His thoughts are above our thoughts. I think God loves to delight his children with happy little surprises. He seamlessly quilts the fabric of our lives with beautiful details and He dovetails our lives together with others in amazing ways. The coins are a symbol of a kind and generous heart…who knows what abundant joy was scattered thereof. This is also a perfect reminder that none of our gifts are too small. God always multiplies the gift so many times over.

  15. Coins in the rain…only God could bring your words of wisdom out of that picture. Thank God for your open heart to receive and ability to write your vision in such a way it encouraged and made one really wonder who and why coins on a mailbox in the rain.

  16. I love this post and the seed it plants for all who read it. Bless someone without knowing the need, reason, or outcome. FMFW #8 – Thanks for liking my posts, but I can’t find you there. I found you hear and I’m glad I did.

  17. Melissa, a lovely post and I love your positve view on life. Even shopping, talking to employees we receive a gift and give at the same time …those small interactions so important for us all. Oh, it is most intriguing about the coins on the mail box – a story there! I wonder were they still there the next time you went to the shops?
