Myrtle!! Myrtle!!! Are you there? Hello! Hello!
We have a new guest at our home. A box turtle has taken up residence right outside our back door. She enjoys creating a hole in the dark mulch. Each morning, she disappears for a while and by the afternoon, returns to the hole she has created.
Alan and I believe the turtle is a mommy who will be laying eggs soon. That is the story we have created for ourselves. We have decided the turtle is a female and our son suggested we name her Myrtle the Turtle.
Myrtle never seems to be afraid of us. No matter how many times we open the back door and lean over the porch railing to gaze at her, she never moves away from us. Can she hear? Her nesting place is right next to the air conditioner unit and that thing is loud.
Although we may never know Myrtle’s true story and how she found our house, there is comfort in knowing she feels safe.
Yes, I do talk to Myrtle during the day. Β That turtle may not know much about humans and may wonder about us like we wonder about her.
Myrtle may not be the most beautiful turtle, but she is fun to watch. Myrtle is a creation of God and she is special.
Now, I can be referred to as the “lady who talks to turtles”. Β π Add that to the ever growing list of nicknames for Mimi. π
Do you ever chat with God’s animals? Do you have a favorite animal?
Blessings and giggles,
Mimi
I love the story. I have a similar situation at my house. A dog has “adopted” my dog, Tommy and me. I’ve named her Lucy. Had to call her something, right? She’s taken up residence on my deck and I’ve given her a bowl of water since it’s so hot here. I have no idea where she came from but until I figure out what to do, she’s Tommy’s new friend and she’s mine.

We have a lizard who sits on the back porch and watches for bugs named Lenny the lizard. He turns his head and looks when we talk with him and isn’t a bit scared. But I also talk to the indoor plants. My special one I saved I named Baby. π Just love me anyway. π

Karen, we had a little bird that came to our back porch and settled in every night when the kids were little. I could never tell what kind it was, but we named it Robby (in case it was a robin.) It came back two or three years in a row on cold Spring nights.

aww we had a myrtle the turtle too when the girls were little and we lived in KY. They are fun to watch that’s for sure! I love that Myrtle stays close to your house and you can talk to him a lot.. Unfortunately I ran over our Myrtle (I thought it was a rock) and broke their little hearts. I felt so bad. Then a couple of days later as I was taking them to school a chicken flew in my path. We could have had chicken for dinner. I’ve been a lot calmer since moving to Michigan and haven’t run over any more of God’s creatures. Really they are so precious i don’t think I could have stood anymore.

Mimi, tears were streaming down my face reading your story! You are so blessed to have such a wonderful creature as a box turtle to make your home her home, too! What a beautiful gift God has given you. And yes, I have been talking to our dog, Brownie, for 15 years now! She is part Daschund and part Jack Russell Terrier. She used to be VERY energetic!! Now it comes in spurts in between all of her naps. π Thanks for sharing this.
